Decision Tools

Practical frameworks for comparing options, communicating trade-offs, and making better decisions under uncertainty.

Organisations often need to compare options across multiple objectives, uncertain futures, limited evidence, and competing priorities. Decision tools help structure complex choices, explore what matters most, and support transparent, defensible decisions.

My work in this area focuses on developing and applying decision-support frameworks that connect analysis with practical judgement. These tools are designed to make uncertainty visible, compare alternatives clearly, and support better conversations around complex decisions.

Why decision tools matter

Decisions made on fixed assumptions can be misleading. Priorities, valuations, forecasts, and future conditions may change, altering what is best. Decision tools help us explore these possibilities, make trade-offs explicit, and choose options that are robust and aligned with what matters most.

Stratified MCDA

Extends conventional MCDA by allowing criteria weights to change across plausible future scenarios. It then combines the results into a probability-weighted ranking, reflecting both performance and the likelihood of different futures.

Stratified CBA

Extends conventional cost-benefit analysis by allowing key valuation assumptions, such as benefit values, costs, discount rates, and baselines, to vary across plausible future scenarios before combining the results.

Acknowledgement

This work builds on the concept of stratification introduced by Lotfi Zadeh and on the Stratified Multi-Criteria Decision-Making method developed by Mehdi Rajabi Asadabadi. My contribution focuses on applying, extending, and translating these ideas into practical tools, workshops, and appraisal approaches, including applications of Stratified MCDA and Stratified CBA for policy, infrastructure, transport, and strategic decision-making.
